16 Days of Activism
annual campaign launches in Berry
Zonta Berry Says NO to Violence Against Women
Zonta Berry is launching its annual 16 Days of Activism, part of Zonta International’s campaign taking a stand against the devastating pandemic of violence against women.
The campaign begins on November 25th - International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. This day is remembered for the brutal assassination of the Mirabel sisters in 1960, killed for fighting for women’s rights on the orders of Dominican dictator Trujillo.
The campaign which runs to December 10 - Human Rights Day aims to raise awareness of women’s rights violations and highlight the alarming statistics of domestic violence within the Shoalhaven region and across Australia.
In the year leading up to June 2023, domestic violence-related homicides in the
Shoalhaven area reached nearly twice the New South Wales average. These tragic figures reflect an ongoing crisis that has deeply impacted local communities and countless lives.
Across Australia, a woman loses her life to domestic violence every six days, a statistic that the Zonta Berry campaign underscores with a powerful visual display at Broughton Court in Berry.
Throughout the 16 days, Zonta Berry will adorn trees in Broughton Court with
orange ribbons and symbolic orange shoes, each pair representing a life lost to
domestic violence. The color orange, internationally recognized in campaigns to end violence against women, stands as a beacon of hope and resilience for those affected, as well as a call to action for community members to stand together in opposition to violence.
Zonta Berry encourages everyone in the community to visit Broughton Court during this period to reflect on the impact of domestic violence and to join the movement to end it. Each ribbon, each shoe, is a reminder of those lost and of our collective responsibility to create a safer world for women and girls.
